Three quarter length portrait. Subject is standing in what appears to be academic robes, holding loose leaves of paper that are rested on a bookshelf. John Birt Davies was born in Hampshire and studied Medicine at the University of Edinburgh, graduating in 1822. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London in 1859 and thereafter decided to base his practice in Birmingham. He was a senior physician at the Queen's Hospital until 1860, and was instrumental in the establishment of both the hospital and Queen's College. He was heavily involved in local politics and was one of the local leaders of the Liberal Party.
