Three quarter length portrait. Figure is seated in an armchair with one hand between the pages of a book. Edward Johnstone was born in Kidderminster, the second child of nine of the physician James Johnstone. He was educated at Kidderminster School and then Edinburgh University. He began his practice at New Street Birmingham in 1779 and was shortly thereafter appointed one of the first physicians of Birmingham's new General Hospital. Johnstone had a keen interest in the education of the poor and during the 1816 depression also provided the local community with employment on his estates. He died in 1851. He was married twice.His son, Edward, was a co-founder of the Literary Association of the Friends of Poland and his son James became a noted physician and was elected first president of the British Medical Association.
