In this painting the figure is seen as three quarter length in academic robes. This figure is John Henry Poynting who was Head of the School of Physics and Astronomy at Birmingham University up until his death in 1914. He is most famous for his experiments on weighing the earth and the Poynting Vector in electromagnetic theory. It was presented to the University by W Waters Butler. The painter, Bernard Munns, was a Birmingham based portrait painter who lived between 1869 and 1942.
