Man sitting with his body towards the left side while looking more towards the right. Hand resting on his lap clasped lightly together. Wearing red robes with gold trim and a white shirt and tie. Beige/brown background.

Three quarter length portrait of the sitter in his Vice-Chancellor's robes, painted to mark his retirement. Professor Edward Marsland was born on May 18th 1923. He was Vice-Chancellor between the years 1981 and 1986 and was also a Professor in the Dental School. The artist, Norman Hepple (1908-1994), was a successful portrait painter, represented in the National Portrait Gallery by his portrait of Francis Evershed (1st Baron Evershed). He was the son of the painter Robert Hepple.
