The figure shown in this portrait is Professor F. H. Garner, who was a noted Professor of Chemical Engineering, and also a collector of Delftwares. He graduated in Chemistry from Birmingham University in 1915 and did not return there until 1942, at which point he was given a chair. During his time at Birmingham University he was, among other things, closely associated with the establishment of the Lodge-Tinkler cracking plant, to advance this process that had been developed by Oliver Lodge and Frank Tinkler. The portrait shows him seated in academic robes writing in his office.
