Three quarter length standing portrait, the sitter turned to the left, and looking directly at the viewer, his hand on his lapel. Sir Gilbert Barling was the first Pro Chancellor of Birmingham University after its change from Josiah Mason College. He is wearing Chancellor's robes. He is named in the Charter of Incorporation drawn up in March 1900. This painting was commissioned by the University of Birmingham in 1924.
