Three quarter length portrait in the 16th century Venetian manner of Sir Oliver Lodge, the first principal of the University of Birmingham. From 1900 to 1919, he came to Birmingham from University College Liverpool, where he had been Professor of Physics and Mathematics. He became a spiritualist and believer in the 'aether' after his son Raymond was killed during WWI and wrote many books on the subject including 'Raymond, or Life and Death'. Birmingham University Special Collections houses Lodge's correspondence. There is a similar portrait by the same artist in the National Portrait Gallery. This painting was commissioned by the University of Birmingham.
