This splendid unicorn is a drinking vessel. The head and upper neck are detachable to allow access to its contents. The stippled treatment of the pelt is typical of late 16th and early 17th-century German representations of animals and mythical beasts. Surviving silver standing-cups in the form of a unicorn are extremely rare, yet they were highly popular subjects among wealthy German Renaissance courtiers.
Inscriptions / Translations: Maker's mark: HE [joined]; also the mark of the city of Constance and an unidentified mark.
