This crucifix was perhaps made in Tuscany. It is incised with the Madonna, St John and an angel on the recto (front), and symbols of the Four Evangelists and the Lamb of God on the verso (back). In medieval churches, a crucifix was often attached to the top of a major altarpiece, or placed above a rood screen that separated the public nave from the church sanctuary.
