Letter from the Bham Microscopists & Naturalists Union, Report of President address from minute book. The President (Wilkinson W H) took for the subject of this address a plant he had collected from the Island of Grand Canary a few years ago. In the vicinity of some external volcano he collected a number of minute seedlings of a species of Cineraria, which he was successful in bringing home to England in a living condition. They were grown in this greenhouse with somewhat extraordinary results. The plants which flourished in the Canary Islands rarely exceeded 18 inches in height, whereas the seedlings brought home reached in 6 months the height of 5 feet, and beautiful colours of purple and pink and a species of leaf-miner that did considerable harm, which was later found to be an extemely minute fly, called 'Phytomyza gemiculata', its name known thanks to the help of those at the British Museum.
