Handwritten copy of the letter from Professor Yapp to H. S. Thompson in reply to letter WBHERB.HST.L.95.2. Tells his opinion, including that Birmingham is not well off for herbaria, particularly with British Phanerogams. In particular, 'we' are very badly off for Pteridophyte and for foreign Phanerogams. Says that the geographical position of Birmingham in the centre of the Midlands makes it particularly important for Birmingham's herbaria to develop and that they would greatly value Thompson's herbaria in Birmingham and his existing appreciation of the city, which would be absent in Cardiff. Does acknowledge that a National Museum in Cardiff is naturally appealing. Cardiff Museum only has a small herbarium but that is because it is only just starting. Yapp says that particularly the continental part of Thompson's herbarium would be of the greatest value to Birmingham, which it is deficient in presently. In the future, Cardiff will have larger opportunities to acquire extensive collections than Birmingham. Suggests Thompson leave the European collections to Birmingham, and the British to Cardiff. Yapp understands that from Thompson's letter, he still wishes to leave his botanical books and papers to Birmingham University. Paperclipped together with WBHERB.HST.L.95.2 onwards.
