Blazer with long sleeves, pockets and lapels. Dark blue with blue, red and gold stripes. The University of Birmingham crest is stitched on the breast pocket. Gold buttons down the front.

Notes:  This blazer belonged to Violet May Warren who was a student at the University of Birmingham c.1935 to 1940. Violet studied English and was a resident of University House. Violet was the first woman in her home area of Mow Cop, Staffordshire to attend University. She died on 4 April 2010 at the age of 93.

Such garments were allowed students to demonstrate their pride in their University. It incorporates the University colours - red, blue and gold - which also pays homage to the official colours of the city of Birmingham. The crest on the breast pocket includes the University motto per ardua ad alta, which translates from Latin as ‘through great efforts to high things’.

It was bequeathed to Research and Cultural Collections in 2010, along with a photograph of Violet wearing the blazer.
