Norman Lancaster, MBE, Hon. LLD, MA, FCA, was president of the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce and Industry in 1958. He held many positions at the University, including deputy Treasurer in the mid-1960s, and Treasurer 1966-75, before being appointed Pro-Chancellor, 1975-79.

Norman Hepple, born in London, came from a family of artists. His uncle was Wilson Hepple, a noted painter of animals, particularly horses and kittens. Norman Hepple was an official war artist with the National Fire Service during the 1940s, and also a member of the Firemen’s Artists’ Committee, along with other artists such as Leonard Rosoman and Bernard Hailstone. He was killed in a road traffic accident in 1994.
