Fry exemplified the inter-arts relationship of the Bloomsbury Group as he wrote erudite essays on all facets of art and visited various sites with enthusiasm, such as Beaumes de Venise, his inspiration here. This painting features a number of building exteriors, framed by a leafy landscape. Fry’s characteristic use of soft dappled hues pervades the work which emanates a feeling of warmth and serenity. The washing-line towards the left of the painting suggests that this is a domestic setting. The minimal use of definition and shadow is unsurprising given that he championed the work of Cezanne, who experimented with colour and form at the expense of accurate perspective.
