Maurice was an able general raised to the rank of Caesar and heir to the Byzantine Empire in 582 by the Emperor Tiberius II, shortly before the latter's death the same year. Maurice then married Tiberius's daughter, Constantina, cementing his legitimacy as Emperor. He intervened in Persian politics by supporting the claim of Khusrau II, who was ultimately successful, resulting in a peace between the two empires. Concentrating on the Balkan front, Maurice kept Byzantine troops on the Danube border, who eventually rebelled and deposed and executed Maurice and his family in November 602. The execution of Maurice gave the Persian Shahanshah Khusrau II a pretext for renewed war with Byzantium.
