Name:  Yazdgird III
Brief biography:  Final Shahanshah of the Sasanian Empire.
Nationality:  Sasanian
Occupation:  Emperor
Period of rule:  632-651
Date of death:  651
Place of death:  Merv

Yazdgird was the final Shahanshah of the Sasanian Empire. Another grandson of Khusrau II to be crowned in the turmoil resulting from Khurau's murder, Yazdgird's rule lasted somehwat longer than his immediate predecessors. Most of his reign was occupied with trying to defeat the Arabic forces, which his armies failed to do. Yazdgird was reputedly killed by a miller at Merv in a case of mistaken identity, while Yazdgird was fleeing around the eastern reaches of the Empire and Turkic lands trying to raise support. His sons fled to China to become generals in the Chinese army, while the Arabs conquered all of the former Sasanian Empire.

Modern Zoroastrians (Parsis) take their calendar years from the reign on Yazdgird III.
