After the Emperor Valerian was captured by the armies of Shapur I at the battle of Edessa in 260, Quietus and his brother Macrianus were set up as emperors in opposition to Gallienus, the son of Valerian, by their father, also called Macrianus. While the two Macriani marched into the Balkans, Quietus stayed behind in Emesa with his father's ally, Ballista. Emesa was besieged by Odaenathus, King of Palmyra, and there Quietus died.
