Eugenius became emperor of the West following the death of Valentinian II in 392, but he was never able to recieve recognition as emperor by the Eastern Emperor Theodosius I, who moved against Eugenius, defeating him at the Battle of the Frigidus River in what is now Slovenia in 394. Eugenius committed suicide following the defeat leaving Theodosius as sole emperor.
