A descendant of Robert Guiscard via his grandfather Bohemond IV of Antioch, Hugh became regent of Cyprus for the infant King Hugh II in 1261, replacing the boy's mother Plaisance, Hugh's first cousin once removed. Hugh also became Regent of Jerusalem for the infant King Conrad in 1264. Hugh II opf Cyprus died in 1267 without reaching his majority, and Hugh then succeeded him, following this by succeeding Conrad as King of Jerusalem in similar wise, albeit not without dispute. He left Jerusalem in 1276, and his bailiff failed to hold it against the claims of King Charles I of Naples. Hugh ruled Cyprus until his death in 1284, when he was succeeded briefly by his son John I. |
