Manouel became ruler in Thessaloniki after his brother, Theodore, was deposed in 1230 following the battle of Klokonitsa. Theodore returned to depose Manouel in 1237, after which Manouel fled to the Empire of Nicaea and with support from Theodore I Laskaris captured and became ruler of Thessaly. |
