Son of Philip I of Taranto and Catherine of Valois, and thus titular Prince of Achaia and Emperor of Constantinople, Robert took up the rule of Achaia in 1322 by a pact with his uncle John of Gravina. His mother ruled for him until her death in 1346, when he inherited her claim to the throne of Constantinople. To further cement his position he married Marie, daughter of Louis of Burgundy and Maud of Hainaut, previous rulers of Achaia, in 1347. She attempted to succeed him at his death in 1364 but his younger brother Philip II defeated her claim. |
