Artemios Anastasios, known by the regnal name Anastasios II, came to power in 713, following the deposition of Philippikos. He himself was deposed two years later in favour Theodosios III, but Anastasios was only made to become a monk, not mutilated or killed. In 719 he attempted to regain the throne from Leo III - who had usurped the throne from Theodosios III in 717 - but failed and was subsequently executed.
