Demetrios Poliorketes (besieger of cities) was the son of Antigonos, one of the generals of Alexander the Great. Antigonos became king of Anatolia, Syria and Palestine after the death of Alexander, and had plans to take control of the whole of Alexander’s empire. His rival kings united against him and he was defeated at the battle of Ipsus in 301 BC. His son Demetrios escaped, taking his father’s fleet with him. Demetrios came to rule much of the Aegean through his fleet (famously besieging Rhodes unsuccessfully in 304 BC) and eventually became king of Macedon in 298 BC. Demetrios was eventually forced out of Macedon and deserted by his fleet. He died a prisoner of his rival Seleukos. |
