Name: Gelimer Brief biography: Last King of the Vandals, 530-534. Nationality: Vandal Occupation: Ruler Period of rule: 530-534 |
|
Gelimer became King of the Vandals in 530 after he overthrew his cousin, Hilderic, a grandson of the Western Roman Emperor Valentinian III and a Chalcedonian Christian. Hilderic's deposition and subsequent imprisonment angered the Eastern Roman Emperor, Justinian I, who reputedly demanded Hilderic's release to Constantinople; Gelimer refused. This then served, in 533, as a pretext for a Roman invasion, for which Gelimer was not prepared. Gelimer was captured and paraded at a military triumph in Constantinople in honour of Belisarius, the victorious Roman general. |
