Name:  Theodore Komnenos Doukas
Brief biography:  Emperor of Epirus amd Thessaly 1215-1230.
Nationality:  Byzantine
Occupation:  Emperor
Period of rule:  1215-1230

Theodore siezed control of Epirus from his infant nephew, Michael, following the death of Theodore's half brother, also called Michael, in 1215. In 1224 Theodore was able to capture Thessaloniki from the Latins and declared himself emperor. He was defeated, captured, deposed in favour of his brother, Manouel, and blinded following the battle of Klokonitsa in 1230, however. He later negotiated his release with the Bulgarian Tsar Ivan II Asen in 1237, and reclaimed the throne for his sons, since he couldn't claim it for himself due to his blindness.
