Redon was a leading member of the Symbolist movement and his non-naturalistic, symbolic use of colour in this tragic painting is highly original. Said to have been painted in 1904, it is one of a number of rich oils and pastels which he produced in the early years of this century. The composition is based on a crucifixion of about 1526, now in the Kunsthalle, Karlsruhe, by the German painter, Matthias Grünewald. Redon's enthusiasm for his work was inspired by the description of Grünewald's Isenheim Crucifixion, contained in the novel Là-Bas (1891) by his friend, J.-K. Huysmans.
