Strozzi was born in Genoa and remained there until moving permanently to Venice in 1631. The old woman seems to have been painted shortly before that move, at a time when the artist was under the influence of Rubens and Federico Barocci. The candour and individuality of the characterisation are unusual in Strozzi's work, where bust-length studies usually portray saints.
