At one point thought to be by Rembrandt, Harmensz. van Rijn (1606-1669). The subject which was formerly known as 'The reconciliation of David and Absalom', is from I 'Samuel', xx: 41-2. It is treated in other drawings by the artist, in the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin, and the Louvre. The present drawing has also been attributed to Ferdinand Bol (1616-80) and Carel Fabritius (1622-1654).
