Mineral and geological supplier at Kennsington, London. The business James R. Gregory, Geologist etc., later became Gregory, Bottley & Co. His business later became known as Gregory, Botley and Co, and some of his collections can be seen in the Leicester Museum and Art Gallery, London Natural History Museum, and the British Museum (IGS London). Most of his specimens were bought at auction from other collectors and he rarely did fieldwork himself. In 1868, he dismissed the claims of diamond discoveries in South Africa as completely false, and was publicly embarrassed a few years later when one of the stones he dismissed as fake was proven by experts to be a large white diamond known as the Star of South Africa, worth millions.
