Callot produced numerous topographical prints and scenes of warfare during the 1630s. This etching shows the battle between the French and Austrian armies outside Avigliano, a small town in Southern Italy. One of Callot’s characteristic traits is his attention to detail. This is shown here in his mountainous landscape, small town, forts, and the soldiers. The curtain gives the scene a stage-like quality, whilst the armour and weapons symbolise the military success of Louis XIII, who is depicted in the portrait in the centre. |
