This portrait of Frederick Douglas was completed at the same time as that of his mother. Frederick was a politician and classical scholar. He wears his hair naturally and his clothing is simple apart from the elaborate cravat and high collar. While in Rome, many of Ingres’s early portrait commissions were for naval and political figures. After the Napoleonic Wars, he spent some months completing portraits of the tourists who were now free to travel throughout Europe.
