Verus himself became an heir apparent for a time, before Hadrian adopted and was succeeded by Antoninus Pius, to whose daughter, Faustina Minor, Verus was betrothed. Antoninus kept Verus as an heir apparent, but alongside Marcus Aurelius, to whom Faustina Minor was now married. When Antoninus died, Verus was proclaimed emperor alongside Marcus Aurelius. Verus was given Marcus Aurelius's daughter, Lucilla, as a wife and Empress. |
