Vitellius was the third of the four emperors from the year known as the year of the four emperors following the murder of Nero. Vitellius was declared emperor by the German legions in AD 69 and was officially recognised after the suicide of Otho. A few months later, however, Vespasian rose against him. Vitellius was executed alongside his brother and son.
