Trajan was Emperor of Rome from 98 to 117 AD. Adopted by the previous emperor, Nerva, Trajan succeeded his adoptive father upon the latter's death. Trajan is most noted for the conquest of Dacia, though he pursued an aggressive foreign policy towards the Armenians and Parthians too. He also commissioned much building work in Rome, including the Baths of Trajan, the Forum of Trajan, and most famously Trajan's column, which celebrated his conquests. Trajan's coinage is not modest; he is refered to as 'optimo' Augustus (the best emperor), and even appears as 'divus' during his lifetime, an honour traditionally reserved for deceased deified emperors.
