Daughter of John and Margaret Nettlefold; one of 6 children (5 girls and 1 boy).
Nina was born in Birmingham in 1895, where she studied at Edgbaston School for Girls. In 1920 Nina married Edward Carter, an ex-serviceman who had fought in the war. They had three children together; William, Richard and Jennifer. Nina left the Unitarian Church and brought her children up as Church of England, possibly influenced by her brother, John Kenrick Nettlefold, with whom she was very close. Due to a malformation on her back, Nina was slightly disabled, making her less physically able than her siblings, but still as spirited and determined. Nina was very good with young children, and also spent a portion of her spare time reading to elderly blind people. Nina’s was killed in a road accident aged just 45.
