Tancred was a Norman warlord from the famous De Hauteville family who ruled various places in Southern Italy. His biographer, Ralph of Caen, tells us that the call to Crusade seemed to him the solution to his life's dilemma between military and monastic careers, and he joined the First Crusade alongside his uncle Bohemond of Taranto. He distinguished himself by leading a campaign into Cilicia to secure supplies during the siege of Antioch. After the capture of Jerusalem in 1099 he was made Prince of Galilee. When Bohemond was captured by his Turkish enemies in 1101, Tancred became regent of Antioch for his uncle. During Bohemond's absence Tancred was able to extend the city's territory into Cilicia and towards Tripoli, considerably increasingh its importance. Bohemond returned in 1103, but left for Europe to raise funds for a new Crusade against Byzantium in 1104, leaving Tancred as regent once more. Between 1104 and 1108 he also acted as regent of Edessa. Bohemond never returned, and Tancred died in office in 1112, to be succeeded by his own nephew, Roger of Salerno. |
