Baldwin du Bourcq was son of Count Hugh of Réthel and a cousin of Duke Godfrey of Bouillon and Count Baldwin I of Boulogne, both of whom he accompanied on the First Crusade and both of whom he would succeed as King of Jerusalem. On Baldwin I's succession to that dignity Baldwin du Bourcq succeeded him as Count of Edessa, but was captured by a Turkish assault in 1104 and not ransomed until 1108, during which time first Tancred of Antioch then Richard of Salerno stood as his regent, the latter of whom Baldwin had to dislodge by force on his release. Baldwin was Count until 1118 when he succeeded his cousin on the throne of Jerusalem. He spent 1123-1124 as a prisoner of the Turks once more, but thereafter reigned until his death in 1131. |
