Son of the Norman Prince Richard of Salerno, Roger accompanied his uncle Tancred de Hauteville on the First Crusade, and later succeeded him as Regent of Antioch in the ongoing absence in Europe of its ruler prince Bohemond. He defeated a Seljuk attack at the Battle of Danith in 1115 but was himself killed in battle against the Artuqid Turks at the so-called Battle of the Ager Sanguinis in 1119, after which King Baldwin II of Jerusalem assumed rule of the city. |
