A minor at his succession to Duke William of Athens, Guy ruled initially under the regency of his mother Helena Angelika Komnena. Coming of age in 1294, he swore fealty to Florent of Hainaut, Duke of Achaia, although he was by now considerably the more powerful of the two; the imbalance was corrected somewhat by Guy's betrothal to Florent's daughter Maud, whom he married in 1299. In 1303 Guy became regent for Emperor John II of Thessaloniki , infant son of his maternal uncle Constantine Angelos; in defence of John's claims he not only drove out an attacking army from Epirus but took over considerable Thessalonikan territories by force majeure. In 1307, he added the supervision of the Morea to his responsibilities, and because of his marriage looked set fair to inherit the remainder of Frankish Greece when he died, young, in 1308, with no clear successor. |
