Name: Nicosia 1920 Hoard Brief biography: A hoard of 117 Komnenian coins. |
|
The Nicosia 1920 hoard, unsurprisingly, was found near Nicosia on the island of Cyprus in 1920 in a ploughed field. The find totalled 117 coins, of which 82 were identifiable to the reign of John II and the rest appeared to belong to the reign of his son, Manouel I. The majority appear to have been produced at the mint of Constantinople, while some of the Manouel pieces came from Thessalonike. Because of its strategic location, the island of Cyprus was rarely not under attack and modern Cyprus is a mediaeval hoard hotspot. Whitting and Donald, who studied this hoard, believed its deposition to be connected with the uprising of Isaac Komnenos in 1185, however, given the hoard’s bias toward coins of John II and lack of any coins of Alexios II or Andronikos I, an earlier dating may be preferable. |
