The town of Kherson/Chersonesus on the southern coast of the Crimean peninsular which produced its own coinage from ancient times. It was originally a Greek colony established in the 6th century BC. Under the Byzantine Empire the extent of Kherson's independence from Constantinople is debated, but culturally it seems to have formed an islet of Greek culture on the northern shores of the Black Sea.

Its Byzanitne coinage always demonstrates an unusual character, being always iconographically distinct, and producing cast, rather than struck, coins from possibly the eighth century AD. For a study of Kherson's coinage see V. A. Anokhin. 1980. The Coinage of Chersonesus. BAR vol. 69.
