Name:  Philippikos
Brief biography:  Byzantine Emperor 711-713.
Nationality:  Armenian
Occupation:  Emperor
Period of rule:  711-713
Date of death:  714/715
Place of death:  Istanbul

Due largely to his name, Bardanes is presumed to be of Armenian origin. Son of a patrikios, he was exiled by Tiberios III, but recalled by the returning Justinian II. In 711 he was declared emperor by revolting troops under his command against Justinian II, who was killed along with his son, Tiberios, in the usurpation. On his accession he took the more Greek name Philippikos, by which regnal name he is known. He was himself deposed in favour of Anastasios II and blinded in 713. Philippikos died shortly after, probably owing to the complications from the blinding.
