Name:  Zoe Karbonopsina
Brief biography:  Wife of emperor Leo VI and mother of Constantine VII.
Nationality:  Byzantine
Occupation:  Empress, then nun.

Zoe was the mistress then fourth wife of Leo IV. Leo's tetragamy was uncanonical in the eastern church, so Zoe and Leo's marriage was of questionable legitimacy, leaving problems for the legitimacy of their son, the future Constantine VII, who was in any case probably born before his parents' marriage. When Leo died in 912, Zoe was dismissed by Leo's brother Alexander; following Alexander's own death in 913, however, Zoe returned to take control of the regency for her son, but was herself dismissed by the regent-usurper Romanos I Lekapenos, and sent to a monastery.
