Isaac came to power in a coup against Michael VI in 1057. In a rare discussion of coin iconography in Byzantine texts, Michael Attaleiates criticised Isaac for his brazenness in being displayed with a drawn sword on his nomismata. Isaac retired to the monastery of Stoudios in Constantinople in 1059, leaving power to the magnate Constantine X Doukas. |
