Verina was the wife of the Emperor Leo I (457-474) by whom she had two children that survived into adulthood, Ariadne and Leontia. Ariadne married Zeno and bore a son Leo. When Verina's husband, Leo I died in 474, he was succeeded by their grandson Leo, as Leo II. Leo did not live out the year, however, and so was succeeded by his father, Verina's son-in-law, Zeno. Verina tried to have Zeno deposed, but her brother, Basiliscus, used the situation to take the throne for himself. Verina then intrigued for the return of Zeno, which succeeded, but she was later imprisoned. Ariadne persuaded Zeno to release her mother, who died not long after in around 484. |
