Hormazd IV was the son of Khusrau I, and succeeded to the throne on his father's death in 579. In trying to improve conditions for the poorer classes and being dismissive of the importance of his generals, Hormazd clashed with the Sasanian nobles and, most problematically, his powerful general Varhran Chobin, who marched on Ctesiphon in opposition to Hormazd in 590. Before Varhran arrived, however, Hormazd's son, Khusrau, had murdered Hormazd and been crowned himself as Khusrau II.
