Brief biography:  Grandmother of the Emperors Elagabalus and Severus Alexander, and a major potentate of the early third century.

Julia Maesa was the sister of the Empress Julia Domna, who sought and obtained power for her family after the assassination of her nephew Caracalla in 217. First she raised her grandson Elagabalus to the throne, and tried to guide him through his emperorship, she then orchestrated the elevation of her grandson through her other daughter, Severus Alexander, to be co-emperor with his cousin. In the mistrust that ensued between the two, Elagabalus and his mother, Julia Soaemias, were murdered.
