Maximinus was declared emperor by the Roman legions after the murder of Severus Alexander by his troops in 235. As a low-born "barbarian" soldier-emperor, the senate confirmed Thrax only grudgingly. He increased the pay of the soldiers and taxes to pay for the pay increase which led to a revolt in North Africa headed by Gordians I and II. The senate, who had never liked Thrax switched their allegiance to the Gordians, and Maximinus, along with his son, Maximus, was executed by his troops whilst besieging Aquileia on the way to Rome. |
