Valerian II was the eldest son of Gallienus and Salonina. Born sometime before 242 AD, he was still young when he was named Caesar in 256 to support his father in representing the imperial family in Illyria. Because of his youth, Ingenuus, an Imperial legate, was made his guardian. Salonina was suspicious of Ingenuus' motives - a suspicion possibly validated when Valerian died under suspicious circumstances in 258. The circumstances were suspicious enough for Gallienus to remove Ingenuus from his position, causing Igenuus to rebel shortly after. |
