Het'oum became King of Cilician Armenia through his marriage to Zabel, daughter of Levon I, in 1226. Because of this, Het'oum and Zabel are presented on the coins together. Het'oum voluntarily submitted to the Mongol Khan as overlord to protect his kingdom in return for which Cilician Armenia was not invaded by the Mongols. Unusually, Het'oum abdicated the throne to retire to a monastery, leaning his son, Levon II as King. |
